Are you there, God? It’s me, Ste--Jacob. Hey, look, you’re supposed to know everything, right? Of course you are. So there’s no need for me to be telling you about the kind of things that I have to put up with everyday from my fellow “Christians.” Look, pal, I know you can get pretty busy, so I’m going level with you about what’s going on around here in case you’ve been missing it. A lot of my brothers and sisters in Christ would prefer it that a boy like me not know who you are. I am out here on the front line, being ostracized everyday by these…well, “Christians” seems to be too strong a word. These people would prefer that I not go to the same school as them or be involved in the same community as them. They don’t want me in the same church. They tell me everyday that I don’t belong in the same Paradise as them! All because of who I choose to love. Maybe they’re right; maybe you are getting further and further away from me everyday because of my relationship choices. Because if you cared so much as I’ve been led to believe, Doctor John Hyman would have never been put in a position of ministry! Any just God would have never opened the doors to allow him in front of a captive audience of impressionable believers! Still, even if my personal relationship choice has pushed you away from me and you won’t help me, then help my fellow students. There’s still hope for some of them, you know. Change a few hearts around here and open the minds of some of these Neanderthals before they can ever have a right to call themselves “Christian!” I know that they want to believe themselves to be righteous; maybe you could work with some of them on that. Even if you’ve considered me a lost cause based on who I choose to love, Lord, I offer you one final petition this evening. My fellow students at Crossroads University would be really proud of themselves if they could identify as Christian. Work with their hearts on that while there’s still time.

The prayer was finished and the twilight darkness remained on the campus community. The pain and humiliation from the afternoon’s “Accountability” lectures remained as well. Nothing was going to change; not even the hearts of the other Christians on campus. A deaf ear had been turned to Jake’s requests; he was certain.

If nothing else, that afternoon’s lecture had given Lindsey ample opportunity to talk openly with Katie about a subject that both girls had purposely avoided since a month and a half before when the awful truth was exposed. Still, if nothing else (now that, literally, the whole university knew what she had done), Dr. Hyman’s tirade had offered Lindsey and Katie the chance to honestly discuss their feelings about the awful Dan situation. While Lindsey acknowledged her guilt over the situation (again), Katie acknowledged her forgiveness over past misdeeds.
